Music & Anxiety Workshop
"Zebs was bouncing last night with Skydanc3r bringing the tunes and insight into music and how it can help our mental health. Amazing workshop and highly recommended!" - Luke, Zebs - Young People Cornwall (Facebook page)
New in 2018 - our first Music & Anxiety workshop!
This was held at Zebs - Young People Cornwall, Truro, with a group of young men aged 14-18, with mental health issues.
We started with a tiny intro to DJing, and then used the sound system to play songs that people chose that meant something to them. We looked at ways that music helps us cope with anxiety or mental health issues. We also covered how music can create some anxiety through stage fright and not feeling good enough. Towards the end we talked more widely about coping strategies including exercise, and spending time with pets. We finished off with another mini DJ session!
This is a 2 hour workshop and would work very well with youth groups, schools, universities, and adult groups. It could be a stand alone session or fit into a wider programme on music or mental health.

Nell Sanders - background
Music played a huge part in helping me recover from severe anxiety (see Chill page). I'm stoked to be able to bring together things that have helped me, and put that into a workshop to help others manage their anxiety, and give hope that you can recover fully.
I ran Music Wings music production courses for Adults with Autism & Aspergers, and co-taught on a DJ course, both with Volunteer Cornwall. I've also volunteered as a surf buddy for the Wave Project since 2015, which involves listening to young people talk about their mental, and physical health issues. I hope to be able to bring that friendly, positive vibe, whilst also addressing sensitive issues, and giving people the space and opportunity for finding better coping mechanisms.
Volunteer Cornwall/EU also kindly paid for me to gain an Adult Education Level 3 teaching qualification (2015), to enable me to create and deliver classes in the most useful, relevant way.
